In
March of 1984, we went to visit my country, El
Salvador. At that time, it was dangerous there
because you never knew when something was going to
happen when you walked or traveled by bus. I
remember many things.
Let
me talk about one day when my husband and I were
with my son who was 2 months old. We decided to
visit the town where I was born. It is about 3
hours from the capital. We took the bus at about 11
p.m. We were very happy.
Then
some dangerous men suddenly stopped the bus. Their
faces were covered, and they told everybody to put
their money in a bag. We did, but then they wanted
everything else we had like jewelry and
identification cards.
After
that, the bus ran again. Everybody was crying
because we didn't have anything left. When we got
to town, my family and I went to my grandma's home.
We stayed for one night, but we couldn't sleep.
The
next day, we decided to come back to the city.
Everything looked good but when the bus was close
to the city after about one hour, the bus stopped
and the driver told everybody to get out of the bus
fast and fall down to the ground because the
guerillas were fighting with the soldiers. We fell
down behind the big stones and branches.
After
about 30 minutes, everything was finished. I saw
how the ambulance picked up people who died or had
some injury. Everybody was screaming. Finally we
arrived to my house.
After
that, my husband started to work to come back to
the U.S. After 3 months, we came back. We planned
never to go back to El Salvador, but we went after
6 years. Everything is very different there today.
I
remember this like it happened yesterday. I'll
never forget these sad memories. Nobody knows how a
person feels when this happens to
them.
