Beauty Starts from
the Inside Out

Asuka Takamoto
from Japan

I learned about eating disorders from a guest speaker who came to my college. She is a nurse and a professional about eating disorders, so she knew how bad it is. First, why do girls have eating disorders? Because girls want to lose weight, they eat only a little or stop eating all together, or they eat too much and then throw up.

I learned that these diseases are known as anorexia and bulimia. These diseases are bad for the body. It takes from three to five years to recover. Sometimes people die.

Why do girls want to lose weight? Some think if they become thin, they can become happy; for example, they think they can get a boyfriend. Another reason is the influence of fashion magazines. There are a lot of magazines in the world. There are a lot of thin models in these magazines. They are very thin and look nice, but this guest speaker asked us, " Do you think this is normal?" Her answer was no. She said that in the world, people have small and thin body types. Also, she said sometimes pictures are not real because they are often edited to make people look more beautiful, so I felt that I don't need worry about my body shape.

Finally, I was impressed with her words. She said, "Beauty starts from the inside out." This means if you feel good about yourself, people will see you as a happy and beautiful, so I think the most important thing is to have a smile on your face, be positive, and try to enjoy life.

Eating Disorders are a Serious Problem for Women

Fumiko from Japan

Eating disorders are a very serious problem for women. I learned that women have this disease because they feel very uneasy about themselves. What are eating disorders? The most common eating disorders are anorexia and bulimia. Anorexics eat so little that they become dangerously thin. Bulimics, on the other hand, eat huge amounts of food in a single sitting, and, immediately get rid of the food by vomiting, or other means, such as using laxatives. For example, a woman may begin to diet if someone tells her ,"You are fat", so she will feel uneasy about herself. She gets worried about herself, and eats less and less each day. Then she becomes dangerously thin. This is anorexia. As a result, anorexics and bulimics are over weight or afraid of becoming over weight. Eating disorders are very terrible. These diseases are difficult to treat, but the most important thing is feeling good about yourself. And if you diet, you should have more information and consult a doctor.
